There are many types of safety syringes on the market. Auto-disable (AD) syringes are designed as single-use syringes, and once depressed, an internal mechanism blocks the barrel so that it cannot be depressed again. Another type of syringe that has the ability to prevent reuse is the break-plunger syringe. The internal mechanism ruptures the syringe when the plunger is fully depressed to prevent further use. These syringes are only effectively deactivated when the plunger is fully depressed; the user can avoid activating the reuse prevention feature and reuse the syringe.

The sheath or shield slides over the needle after an injection is done with a needle stick prevention syringe, which also has a re-use prevention feature (automatic disabling mechanism or breaking the plunger).
Retractable syringes use manual or spring-loaded retraction to retract the needle into the syringe barrel. Some brands of spring-loaded syringes may have a splash effect, where blood and fluids are ejected from the cannula due to the retraction force. Manual retraction syringes are generally easier to depress because there is no spring resistance.
